ATI Module II: Nursing Concepts describes the focal point of my job as a future nurse and that is client-centered care. Client-centered care is a critical concept to understand and apply since it describes how I will be able to meet my patients needs on all care levels including physical, emotional, social, cognitive, and psychomotor. This process also requires me to put aside bias’, opinions, previous beliefs and values in order to meet my patient’s needs. This can be a difficult aspect of nursing since I am human, and implicit bias or “blind spots” occur and can negatively affect my patient’s care. For this reason, it is imperative for me to continuously check in with myself and ask “is this the best option for the patient” and “is this what they want?”
The module also describes autonomy, which relates to adhering to the patient’s wishes. This is an important concept for me to keep in mind in the future since my opinion may not align with my patients. For example, if my young patient elects to sign a DNR, I need to abide by it. Keeping in mind this concept of patient-centered care allows for me to provide the best care for my patient, keeps them safe, and allows for them to remain autonomous during their care process.
